New Road Safety Bill

Will the new Road Safety Bill make our roads any safer?

The UK has one of the best road safety records in the world and the Government is committed to continuing improvements, with a proposed reduction of 40% on annual road deaths by 2010.

The proposed 2005 Road Safety Bill promises to make our roads even safer and many industry groupings including insurance companies and insurance brokers are pushing for even stronger measures to be included. The following topics are under consideration and include:

  • Drink Driving
  • Speeding
  • Penalties
  • Retraining Courses
  • Driver Training and Testing
  • Foreign Drivers
  • Support for Enforcement
  • Miscellaneous Road Safety Issues

As a long established insurance broker, we're always interested in legislation that will help improve safety for road users. Although it's unlikely to reduce insurance premiums in the short term it may well help to keep car insurance, van insurance and motorcycle insurance premiums at a reasonable level for the next few years.

On the 11th January 2006 the Bill received its third reading in the House of Lords where attempts were made to amend the provisions for penalty points. It is unclear how long we shall be waiting for the Bill to be enacted although it will now proceed to the House of Commons.

We look forward to the new Bill being implemented as quickly as possible.
