Motorists can avoid higher car insurance costs and save on petrol by changing the way they drive, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
According to the IAM, the cost of motoring has risen by almost 20 per cent since the start of the year, although motorists can take steps in order to make savings.
The IAB warned that car accidents can lead to fuel spills and traffic jams, as well as the more obvious financial implications.
"Simply staying safe saves not only your no claims bonus, but significant costs and emotional tragedy," it stated.
However, drivers can also save money by improving fuel economy through changing their driving techniques.
The IAB explained that avoiding sharp acceleration and braking, turning off the engine in traffic jams and planning journeys can all reduce fuel consumption.
Additionally, not only does obeying the speed limit ensure motorists avoid penalty points and higher car insurance premiums, but it can reduce the amount of fuel they use as driving at 80mph on a motorway can cost three to four pence more per mile.
Earlier this week, the RAC called on people to consider all potential costs involved in running a car.
