'More drivers face parking penalties'

Drivers who already have numerous costs - such as fuel bills or motor trade insurance payments - may also have faced paying parking penalties over the last few years.

According to the Telegraph, the number of motorists shelling out for parking tickets has increased fivefold in the last six years.

Citing figures from the Traffic Penalty Tribunal, the publication states that between 2006 and 2007, a tenth of all drivers received parking tickets.

Some 3.58 million drivers had to pay parking penalties in 2006-07, compared with 794,851 in 2000-01.

A further increase is expected to be recorded this year to reflect the fact that the past year has seen about a fifth of local councils become responsible for their area's parking enforcement.

Revisions were recently made to the parking laws, with people who wrongly use disabled spaces now expected to pay out £70 for doing so.
